Store-Based Pharmacist - Generally, entry level for graduating pharmacists is the staff pharmacist position. Promotion would be to the managing pharmacist, or PIC (Pharmacist-in-charge). The PIC oversees and manages the other staff pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and other pharmacy helpers and associates. The PIC is also responsible for budgets, inventory, and conflict resolution. The PIC answers to the DEA and state boards of pharmacy if problems arise, and is the liaison from that particular store to the regulatory agencies.

Field-Based Pharmacist - Usually these are the Pharmacy District Managers. The district managers, or healthcare managers, may spend several days a week in a central office or at a home office, and the rest of the time traveling between retail store sites. They oversee the store-based pharmacists, and deal with any problems that may arise, and report back to their supervisors.

Home Office Based Pharmacists - These pharmacists are based at the home office of the retail drug store chain. They may be involved in areas such as purchasing, negotiating pharmaceutical contracts, negotiating PBM contracts, developing formularies, government compliance issues, clinical services, and human resources, among many other things. The opportunities are varied at the home offices of these chains, and the possibilities of promotion are often greater.
