INTERN
PHARMACISTS
All state boards of pharmacy require candidates to complete an
internship or externship before licensure. Such practice experience
usually consists of 1,500 hours of experience that are gained during
pharmacy school (beginning after the first year of training). Some
states require that internship hours be gained solely after graduation
from pharmacy school and before licensure. The internship process is
subject to state board of pharmacy regulations. Each intern,
internship site, and preceptor must register with the state board of
pharmacy to have the hours counted toward licensure.
The term "pharmacy intern" typically denotes two
distinct subsets of people employed in the field of pharmacy. The
"pharmacy intern" is usually a pharmacy student that works summers in a
pharmacy in a structured program of learning. Pharmacy interns must be
licensed with the state board of pharmacy, and must be supervised by a
"Supervising Pharmacists", that is supervising pharmacists who has been
trained in teaching pharmacy techniques to pharmacy students. The
pharmacy intern must also have a structured training plan on file with the
state board of pharmacy in many states. The
other group of people that the term "pharmacy intern" denotes are
"Graduate Pharmacy Interns". This group has already graduated from
pharmacy school, and are working until they can either take the NABLEX, or
obtain enough hours of supervised pharmacy work to become officially
licensed.
