ALABAMA PHARMACIST SALARY |
2005-2006 Pharmacist Salary Survey It has never been a better time to be a pharmacist! In 2005 and early 2006, the average pay for pharmacists nationwide topped $100,000 annually. Most pharmacists hired into new positions also received a sign-on bonus, ranging from $2500 for new graduates, to over $30,000 for pharmacists accepting positions in hard-to-fill retail outlets and in under-served locations. Most new graduates we speak to are being offered at least $48 per hour by the major retail pharmacy chains.
The ongoing pharmacist manpower shortage and the ever increasing demand for pharmacy services (due to the expansion of retail pharmacies and the aging population) are the primary drivers of pharmacist wages. With the baby boomer generation using an increasing number of medications, a trend that will continue as the population ages, the demand for pharmacists is forecast to dramatically outpace supply for the foreseeable future. Pharmacist wages should continue to rise at a least at a 5% to 10% clip annually. Pay for pharmacists also varies by geographic location. Urban areas, where more pharmacists tend to be found, tend to pay less than rural areas. California pharmacists are paid more on a dollar for dollar scale than most other states, however, when factoring in the cost of living, the wages are similar. Many pharmacists are now receiving sign-on bonuses for pharmacy employment. These bonuses vary from employer to employer, but most range from $5000 to $20,000 for a one year commitment. |
