QUICK GUIDE TO LANDING A PHARMACEUTICAL SALES JOB

1.You must sell yourself first. Be a shameless self-promoter and show confidence in yourself. Be prepared to do what it takes to land the position, and it will show the pharmaceutical companies that you are willing to do what it takes to promote their product.

I have a good example of the type of promotion that some drug reps may have to do while working, and it will give you a feeling for what you might have to do to land your dream job. I was getting off a hospital elevator and a person got on dressed in a dog suit. This person looked like a cute and cuddly 6 foot tall St.Bernard puppy! The "puppy" looked over at me, and said "Don't ask - I'm a drug rep"! Think of the pride that this professional sales person must have had to swallow to get dressed up in a "puppy" costume and go visit doctors and nurses. This was a company pushing an antibiotic to family practitioners and OB-GYNs. and not to pediatricians, as you might expect. This is an extreme example or promation and getting people to remember you, but it is something that typifies what you must be willing to do to land your job.

2. Know the company. Use the guide on the left to learn all you can about the company you are interviewing with, and don't be ashamed to ask INTELLIGENT" questions during the interview.

3. Make sure your resume is accurate and up-to date. You should have at least a BS degree, and be interested in science. A degree in pharmacy is not required, but some sort of advanced degree, such as an MBA is helpful and will set you apart from the crowd.

4. Show that you are a self starter, be motivated and confident, and that you can be truly excited about your product. This rubs off on everyone around you!
